Gearing for the Scoobies. 31/05/05

The Subaru Engines, as any one who has driven them will know, use their considerable low end torque to power the kart. When gearing the kart for different tracks there are a few things that need to be taken into account. Firstly track configuration needs to be taken into account, if the track is twisty and does not have a lot of straights then the ratio should be somewhere around about 8% less than you would gear a good Prokart. If the track is a sweeping ttrack with very few slow corners then the ratio should be in the region of 14% less. Gearing for Stretton for example is 20 front and 64 rear going up or down a tooth for depending on driving style. Where as Milton Keynes is 20 front and 68 rear, yet a Prokart will use 20 front and 73 rear for both. These are only guidelines to help but to date we have all found that this is the case.

Fitting the Subaru Engine. 1/05/05

Although the engine is a little wider than the Honda GX160’s. It is possible to fit it to any prokart chassis. The best method we have found is to use tall right hand engine mounts for both sides – this is the method we used on Daytonas corporate fleet and they all have fat b*****d seats in. These mounts are available from BIZ Karts. There has also been some discussion about clutches. We have finished testing all the various options and have found that the MAXTorque 20 Tooth 219 to be the best option, as they are cheap, bite at the right rev range and offer good reliability. They also fit under new MSA chain guards which our GTEC clutches don’t .
